“Basements: Music to fight hypocrisy” (2016) has lasted over two years. The Madrid based power trio have slowly conquered an ever increasing national and international audience, mainly supporting -and supported by- the underground scene, DIY, and in short, honouring the title of that first album.
Fast forward two years and the number of gigs the band have played can already be counted by the hundred, they have already toured Europe twice, done two tours around the United Kingdom and one in Japan, proving that Fon, Paula and Jamie definitely don’t suffer a lack of energy when it comes to hopping into the van and getting around. Especially the latter, Jamie also has his (very active) parallel project, Jamie 4 President, confirming his natural talent for creating guitar riffs and melodies that go straight to the heart.
The latest demonstration of Wild Animals’ hyperactivity is “The Hoax” (2018), ten new and extraordinary songs written between the three of them, full of personal stories, with open and critical views, nostalgia, it’s a toast to friendship, and includes melodies and fuel in equal parts. An ideology and aesthetic (they have yet again trusted the art- work to illustrator Manu Griñón) that has already proven to be a strong hallmark of the band.
The album starts with major hit, “Lost in translation”, where the band revive tour adventures. Nostalgia fills the albums second track “Science-fiction”, but also criticizes the dangerous power of isolation that smartphones and social media can cause. The album continues with “Interrupted girl”, a shout out for the normalisation of sexual freedom (sung with a folk-punk rhythm).
We could go on until the last track of this bands album. But it all comes to say that they are fully positioned before society. They live out experiences and tell stories in an endearing way, always looking to find and keep all that’s true, real and shared, in a more and more technified, manipulated and individualist world.
Musically, echoes of Superchunk, Sugar o Dinosaur Jr. are still present, but its their own personal sound that really stands out now, more and more cultivated, equally dirty as crystalline and full of details and songs that are perfect from start to end. Santi Garcia has again produced the album hand in hand with the band to create a unique sound, album after album, this time combining the acoustics of a Catalan masia (Cal Pau Recordings) for the drums with his renowned studio Ultramarinos Costa Brava, for the rest” (BCore)

TV GIRL continúan en la brecha, pese a llevar ya una buena temporada en ésto, y pese a ser una banda eminentemente de Sampler-Pop, si bien con el tiempo han ido evolucionando y adaptando su sonido a modelos más cálidos, más cercanos a melodías incluso tropicales e intimistas sin olvidar del todo sus raíces más cercanas al Pop sesentero y al Retro.

Instrumentaciones más que concisas, intimismo a más no poder, sencillez expresiva y lírica, sentimientos a flor de piel y pulsiones folkies… Algo así es este segundo álbum del trío de Brooklyn FLORIST.
“At the center of Florist’s spartan sound, Sprague is a lyricist who always sounds like a wise-beyond-her-years naturalist—a sort of upstate New York Phil Elverum in training. But here she claims that role with a previously unseen authority and purpose. When struggling to make sense of a parent’s death, she seeks solace in nature’s logic; when faced with everyday struggles, she finds comfort in the smallness of human affairs. There’s a timeless quality to these songs that makes them feel unmoored from the current moment, a reminder that this too will pass. But Sprague still has an empathetic embrace waiting for anyone who’s trying to cope during difficult times. “If you’re terrified of living, like me, I hope you’ll be fine,” she sings on ”Blue Mountain Road,” “Cause we’re terrified together, in this terrifying time.
Like Elverum, Sprague has a tendency to cut the most direct path as a lyricist. But on these songs, she manages to withhold her poetic impulses almost completely, as if to ask, why wrap the world up in verse when there’s so much beauty to be found in seeing it as it is? This directness can be disarming, like on “Eyes in the Sun,” where she asks, point blank, “Do you wanna join the road of my life?” She then lays it all out in just a few lines, like her hopes and fears are two sides of the same coin: “It’s been a while but I’m not afraid/Of the things that make me feel something big/Like looking at your eyes in the sun/Like looking at your eyes in the dark.”
While many of these songs could be described as minimal, they’re also musically rich. Round chords ring and synths twinkle on “Glowing Brightly,” as Sprague thumbs through the faded snapshots in her head. On the title track, the band wraps up Sprague’s gentle voice in a warm cocoon of sound. “Blue Mountain Road” opens with distant noises that bring to mind the sound of a freight train while “Instrumental 3” feels like the music you might put on in the drawing room of a creaky old house in an attempt to lure out the ghosts. Nearly all of these songs are driven by guitar lines that are simple yet memorable, a perfect match for Sprague’s earnest, plainspoken profundity.
The concept of mindfulness has become something of a trend lately, peddled by meditation apps, self-help books, and yoga classes as an antidote to the ills of an over-connected life. But a state of mind isn’t something that can be bought, it’s something that has to be earned. Sprague seems to understand this; her hard-won superpower is an ability to communicate to us the beauty and value of things that we often overlook. On these songs, she often cuts through the mind’s noise to focus on what’s right in front of her: a beam of light, a lover’s eyes, the worn texture of a cherished memory. This focus seems to have only intensified following her accident and recovery. In this regard, she brings to mind the late Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse, who, following his own brush with death, returned to his craft more present and attuned to the living things around him. Like Sparklehorse’s music, If Blue Could Be Happiness has the power to transform your outlook and change the trajectory of your day, if you will let it.
The album’s arresting closer, “Red Bird,” appears here in the original demo form that Sprague recorded and played for her mother on the day before she died. But even without knowing this fact, the song captures your attention. There’s something intangible and powerful at the core of it, a force you can’t quite put your finger on but which can move you to tears all the same. Sprague traces a delicate, lilting melody with her voice as strings quiver like leaves behind her, summoning a sense of longing that feels ancient and deep. Birds have always embodied nature’s wisdom in Florist’s songs and here they provide comfort, a stable force in the face of impermanence and loss. “I understand the birds now that I’ve learned some things,” Sprague sings in the song’s final moments. “Johnny Lynch – the spark that ignites Pictish Trail – is something of a sonic hermit who has spent large parts of the past few years tucked away in his caravan on the Hebridean isle of Eigg.
Way back when, he surfed the world of DIY electronic folk-tinged croft pop, ran collectives and labels, then he masterminded a life-affirming album. ‘Future Echoes’ from 2016 was hatched amid disagreements, family deaths, the worry and wonder of new parenthood and the cyclical nature of life – and it was all set to a twinkling pop backdrop – think Prince in an Aran sweater.
One look at the multi-costumed psychedelic pop in the video for ‘After Life’ and the silver lining shines. Sure, he’s rated as officially “untidily intriguing”, but he has the tunes (and the wit and wisdom).

Dual/Duel es algo así como un viaje hacia nuestras interioridades, hacia nuestras entrañas. Un viaje pausado, un remanso sonoro en medio del tumulto de ondas hertzianas, de informaciones, de ruidos, e incluso de músicas que nos invade a diario; aunque, efectivamente, empleando esa dualidad que se nos anuncia en su título.
Si con esos saxos que parece que nos despiertan en Let them ring nos iniciamos hacia ese periplo interior; en cortes como Nihilistic desilusions el Capitán nos muestra un camino aparentemente más florido hacia ese hogar, ese agridulce hogar que nos acogerá definitivamente en la fantasmagoría obsesiva de Hidden intentions. El sentido dual de este periplo de Dual/Duel nos conduce en Decadence a esa paz interior que definitivamente se encuentra en el ritmo de marcha de Please deliver. La vida contiene esos altibajos. El viaje del Capitán es un reflejo más de ello. Las emociones van y vienen, y eso mismo ocurre con las composiciones de este disco. En cualquier caso, éste finaliza con el mensaje de The greatest, quizás la canción más sencilla y probablemente más bella del conjunto. Una forma de indicarnos que esa idea del viaje continuará en breve. Para ello, The Crooked Crew se vale de Diminishing returns, una preciosa pieza instrumental que cierra ese círculo, ese viaje interior. Para darle forma sonora a Dual/Duel, Capitán Excuse se vale de una instrumentación y de unas influencias decididamente clásicas, solemnemente folkies: huele “a madera” a lo largo del álbum. Ahora, el oyente (o lector), debe ser quien extraiga las conclusiones que le resulten más convenientes.

ALGUNAS IMPRESIONES…
1.- Dime a dónde crees que te lleva o llevará el mundo de la música hoy en día, en el estado de madurez creativa en el que te encuentras.
Honestamente, no espero que nos arrastre a ningún sitio. Tenemos el privilegio de poder trabajar desde una plataforma totalmente independiente. El hecho de que tu producto pueda ser ignorado o alabado por las masas es algo que se escapa de nuestras manos y tampoco nos quita el sueño. Hay quien se conforma con unos cuantos “likes”, los que se empeñan hasta la saciedad en repetirte que bien se lo pasan en el escenario tocando para un público prácticamente inexistente. Cada vez que damos por terminado un proyecto, nos desconectamos y empezamos a pensar en el siguiente. Los músicos de nuestra generación saben que no hay dinero ni fama en la escena actual, lo cual nos lleva a tu segundas pregunta…2.- Y ésta, como intuyo la respuesta de la primera, tiene su relación: ¿Cuáles son tus motivaciones que encuentras actualmente para seguir componiendo?
Ni más ni menos que el manido “amor al arte” por pretencioso que parezca. La tecnología de hoy en día en un arma de doble filo. Te permite crear desde tu hogar un producto prácticamente profesional. Lo cual condiciona que el mercado esté saturado de productos de todo tipo y estilo en tantas plataformas de tal forma que los árboles no te dejan ver el bosque. ¿Dónde puedo encontrar el que a mi me interese entre toda la maraña de digamos “subproductos”?3.- ¿Tienen tus canciones una idea de viaje (no sé si a ninguna parte) o son sencillamente un reflejo de cómo ves las cosas a los ´50 ? (Si te parece no es necesario señalar la edad, jajajajajaja…)
El viaje a ninguna parte o como moverte sin salir de casa… La idea del movimiento ha sido una constante en mis temas. La idea de permanecer en un lugar ( creativo) me repele. Intento no repetir el mismo disco una y otra vez el viaje debe ser siempre hacia delante, valiente y sin concesiones. Si tus necesidades emocionales son las mismas a los 50 que eran cuando tenías 20, es que estás haciendo algo mal.4.- ¿Es esa decadencia del corte 4 real, un sentimiento propio o sencillamente una pose poética/musical ? Todo pose…mi vida es muy relajada y lejos del mundanal ruido…por ello no siempre escribo en primera persona. Sería aburridísimo. Hoy es difícil diferenciar a los verdaderamente creadores de aquellos que se calzan el uniforme de rebelde. Las estrellas se ganan en las redes sociales y por la cantidad de tinta que llevas en la piel. Antes era más fácil saber quien pertenecía al gremio…
El mundo suburbano vive otra clase de decadencia más, digamos mundanal y aceptada. Te hablo de obras que me han marcado e inspirado como la literatura de Richard Yates, Raymond Carver, John Cheever… esa Decadencia de beber Martinis a medio día, infidelidades en la oficina, sueños de juventud rotos etc. La mediocre vida del ciudadano medio. lo cual nos lleva a la siguiente pregunta…5.- La inevitable pregunta de cualquier músico frustrado (jjjjjjjjjjjj) Háblame de cuales son tus influencias “actuales” de tu música. Tu disco me suena muy clásico, tiene mucho del folk tardo sesentero o de ciertos grupos de comienzos de los setenta. No sé si ando muy desencaminado…
Admito que en los últimos años me siento más atraído por la literatura que por la música. La literatura tiene aún la capacidad de impresionarme y abatirme que un día tuvo la música. Cuando se trata de nuevas músicas no puedo evitar la sensación de Deja Vu. De haber estado allí ya, de haberlo vivido en primera persona. ¿Sueno a perro viejo..? si es así es porque lo soy…
Admito que lo que he escuchado últimamente y que efectivamente ha influenciado este disco pertenece al llamado Folk rock de finales de los 60 y comienzos de los 70. Fairport Convention, Bert jansch, John Martyn, las producciones de John Boyd etc. Discos que suenan a Madera, que huelen a personas interactuando, algo a lo que se aspira pero que sabes no estás destinado para ello. Seguramente, el próximo disco será algo más abstracto y conceptual, probablemente instrumental y atmosférico. Cuando eliminas el punto focal de la voz, aparecen otros matices que normalmente pasas por alto.6.- ¿Cuál es el sentido final que le das al disco…? Quiero decir, piensas que es un disco optimista o crees que es un trabajo para dedicarle minutos y más reflexivo… Yo lo veo como una mezcla entre ambas perspectivas. Algunas canciones tienen un aire y arreglos muy alegres, muy folkies, mientras que otras tienen un mensaje más oscuro. Creo que el disco es coherente consigo mismo, si eso tiene sentido. La instrumentación varía según los temas pero la producción y el trasfondo es similar. No soy una persona muy optimista por naturaleza, lo cual me convierte en un…”realista”? con los pies en el suelo y la cabeza en las nubes. Admiro enormemente a los compositores que pueden contarte una historia de forma lineal, con principio y fin. Desafortunadamente, ese no es mi caso. El mundo no necesita más mensajes. Solo quiere mensajeros a los que colgar del árbol más alto…

Algo se mueve por el sur del sur. La escena de bandas gaditanas ha generado en los últimos tiempos una serie de bandas incipientes con la frescura y las ideas suficientes como para ser tomadas más en serio de lo que el actual mundo de la música se las toma. Es una crítica no indisimulada, pero es igualmente una realidad: los grupos se mantienen por puro amor a la música y a lo que hacen. CRUZ BENGALA es el último proyecto de nuestro amigo Antonelo Baizán, un músico inquieto que ha puesto en marcha previamente bandas como Detergente Líquido, y que se ha reunido con compañeros que han pasado por grupos como Colin Rei, Triángulo Vicioso o Ática, entre otros.
Su sonido es deudor del Indie-Pop de guitarras de los noventa, con referencias como Teenage Fanclub, Nada Surf o los Pixies más efervescentes. Su primer Ep es este Teórico Adherente, lleva dos días en la red y puede ser la vía de escape para tu necesidad de Pop de guitarras.

Encontrarnos con un álbum de THE BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE constituye algo así como saludar a ese viejo amigo al que no ves tantas veces como te gustaría, pero que disfrutas un montón tomando un café amistosamente con él puesto que tienes infinidad de temas de los que hablar. TBJM llevan ya décadas en este negociado, y sus presupuestos iniciales no han variado demasiado. Quizás por ello en TJB les adoramos y les queremos tanto. Su integridad musical y sus principios son básicamente los mismos desde que comenzaron, si bien Anton Newcombe ha sabido darle ligeros giros estilísticos a sus discos conforme avanzaban los años, añadiéndoles elementos más lisérgicos, más electrónicos o sencillamente más Pop.
Something Else es el enésimo álbum de las huestes de Newcombe, una especie de vuelta a los orígenes sonoros: sencillez Pop con aderezos y arreglos justos (hasta la portada, como en otras ocasiones, es una referencia Pop, en este caso al White Album Beatlemano). Todo ello regado, cómo no, de los clásicos riffs que han ido adornando su carrera y de esas referencias musicales inevitables, como es el caso de Silent Stream, que es una rendición al clásico de Mcguinn/Hippard Space Odissey, que cerraba solemnemente el Notorious Byrd Brothers, que debe ser una referencia inevitable para cualquier aficionado a la Psicodelia.
Something Else es un disco con pocos altibajos y una manera perfecta de descubrir a los TBJM si es que alguien aún no los conoce ni los adora.
Paseando al perro – SOCCER MOMMY: Clean (Fat Possum, 2018)

Últimamente estamos a vueltas con el Pop femenino de raíz Neo-folkie. Un género que está mostrando caras visibles como las de Courtney Barnett, Anna Burch (de la que hablamos el otro día) o Sophie Allison (aka. SOCCER MOMMY). Hubo un mini álbum a final del año pasado, pero éste es, oficialmente, su disco de debut. Y lo cierto es que Sophie ha levantado un poco el tono de la distorsión y elevado el de la producción y la limpieza sonora. Nos sigue atrayendo su sonido, pero ¡ay!, aquel arrebato inicial nos molaba tanto que realmente lo echamos de menos. Last girl, por ejemplo, es uno de los cortes regrabados que apareció en su primer sencillo casero. No obstante Clean (hasta su título lo dice), tiene varias canciones que pasan holgadamente el corte, y se pueden encontrar entre las mejores de los aficionados al género: Cool, Your dog, Last girl, Skin… En el resto, Sophie parece relajarse e irse a pasear al perro tranquilamente. ¡Benditos veinte años!
“In 2017, Soccer Mommy signed with Fat Possum Records and released Collection, which re-recorded selections from two years’ worth of uploaded songs. Less than a year later, Clean marks the official debut of the project by introspective singer/songwriter/guitarist Sophie Allison. On paper, the album represents a significant move from a homemade enterprise to a proper studio recording with a full band and an esteemed producer in Gabe Wax (Beirut, Palehound). Technically, Allison was already recording songs with other musicians and a dedicated engineer, but Clean takes it further, adding depth and precision to a still identifiable sound. Namely, the intimacy, subtle textures, and distinctly sinuous quality of her songwriting remain. From time to time, the production and mix add conspicuous touches that are far removed from her earliest tape recordings. “Still Clean,” for example, drops out of the stereo mix on the final chorus, rebuilding with additional vocal tracks and shimmering electronics before it closes on an exposed guitar line. Perhaps at least as significant as the production, it’s also her first group of songs to be conceived as an album. A 20-year-old at the time of its release, growth itself is a theme of Clean. “Your Dog,” for instance, isn’t about a cuddly pet at all, but rather her own inequitable relationship, one she’s ready to leave. The bass-heavy track chugs along, incorporating leaping guitar arpeggiation and layers of humming distortion as it unfolds. Dissatisfied and disarmingly candid throughout, songs like “Your Dog” and the dreamier “Blossom (Wasting All My Time)” decide to move on from relationships because our protagonist wants better (“I can’t see you blossom in the future that I’m dreaming”), while the incongruously power poppy “Last Girl” has the singer giving ground as she compares herself unfavorably to her beau’s last girlfriend. Similarly, alongside a catchy melody and layers of harmonic guitar, “Cool” covets the status of another. That song ends in collapse, slowing and distorting pitches as it fades out. Throughout the album, Allison‘s vulnerable delivery and quietly tormented lyrics stick as much as hooks, artfully gradated guitar tones, and haunting echo that’s mostly reserved for accompaniment, but they all work together in unsettled harmony” (All Music)

Next up was Marine Research, who released their debut single on wiaiwya in 1998, followed by an amazing LP on K
Then came Tender Trap, more jangle POP than their previous outing, and with Allo Darlin’s Elizabeth Morris on guitar and vocals for a couple of years

Si algo me sorprendió cuando oí el debut de Anna Burch, este Quit the Curse (Polyvinyl, 2018) fue la perfecta estructura de la gran mayoría de sus cortes: su academicismo perfecto, su adecuación melódica a unos cánones conocidos (Indie-Pop de los noventa, Pop sesentero de solistas femeninas, Folk de raigambre setentera…) pero no por ello menos agradecidos y mencionables; todo ello unido a una voz absolutamente arrebatadora.
Lo cierto es que al leer algo más de la chica, descubrí que su trayectoria musical iba más allá de este debut, y que había formado parte de proyectos previos. Evidentemente, gracias a esa información, comprobaba que esa calidez y calidad de sus temas era consecuencia de su experiencia previa.
Quit the curse es el típico disco que no te descubrirá nuevos horizontes pero que te hará disfrutar si eres amante de los sonidos noventeros y de la nueva escena neofolkie. Recomendable.
“The nine songs that comprise Quit the Curse come on sugary and upbeat, but their darker lyrical themes and serpentine song structures are tucked neatly into what seem at first just like uncommonly catchy tunes. Burch’s crystal clear vocal harmonies and gracefully crafted songs feel so warm and friendly that it’s easy to miss the lyrics about destructive relationships, daddy issues and substance abuse that cling like spiderwebs to the hooky melodies. Kytes – THE ORANGE KYTE: Say Yes! (Little Cloud Records, 2018)

The Orange Kyte acaban de publicar su segundo trabajo, este Say Yes! (Little Cloud Records, 2018). En él la banda se afianza dentro de la escena neopsicodélica, con cierta voz propia, si bien su proyección es más que minoritaria, y su distribución muy menor. Lo cierto es que su sonido es más que aceptable y deleitable. Se mueven a gusto en esa Psicodelia en la que han asimilado las influencias más oscuras del sonido en los años ochenta, presentándose como una banda algo oscura pero aparentemente muy independiente y de sonidos auténticos.
Este Say Yes! supone el primer disco grabado de forma unitaria como tal, pues su debut (Grow it Right, 2017) era más bien una colección de singles y canciones que la banda grabó de foma más aislada.
“This is a very unique album and The Orange Kyte have a very unique sound. The band consists of Stevie Moonboots [vox, bass, guitars] and Dave Mulvaney [drums, percussion], and Mat Durie [organ, percussion, vox]. The Orange Kyte Says Yes! is their second studio album. Their debut album, Grow It Right, was released in 2017, following a year when the band issued a single a month in 2016. Quite an accomplishment, but here we have The Orange Kyte Says Yes! And this is one incredible album.
The music is psychedelic by way of the 1980s. The Orange Kyte has roots in the 1960s, but it is via Echo and The Bunnymen, or Kissing The Pink, or The Church. This is not a bad thing, because although these bands are their roots, they manage to make the music their own, in their own distinct style. They blend aspects, and in the end one is left with The Orange Kyte sound.
The Orange Kyte makes excellent use of a variety of sounds throughout (listen for the sax subtly mixed in in the song “Goats”), and this is where the band excels. When you think you know where they are going with the song, they make a sharp left turn. At times the effect is brilliant.
The playing on the album is top notch. Moonboots et al like to use noise, but they do so effectively. It may sound incredible, but they create some very fine melodies throughout with noise. Again, it is trippy, flowing music but it all works. The last track, “PTR” is pure beauty in a song. Well arranged and brilliantly produced, it brings the album to a stunning conclusion. This song features some brilliant guitar work and the ending of the song is perfect.
There are some special guests on the album. “Goats” features Peter Holmstrom of The Dandy Warhols, and Bryan Nichols of Dead Ghosts makes an appearance on the beautiful and appropriately titled “Blue Ghosts”.
This is a great album, a great sophomore effort, and an album that should be noticed by a larger community. They have their fan base, but this might be the one to get them the exposure they deserve” (Spill Magazine)

Graban para una disquera española, si bien son originarios de Pennsylvania. Su sonido es rabiosamente fresco, despreocupado y bastante impetuoso: una mezcla de Pop añejo y garaje algo edulcorado. Este es su debut, un Ep de cuatro temas que evidentemente dejan con ganas de más.

“It took several run-ins with the song before my brain started firing off alert messages to my hand, commanding it to reach for the volume knob in order to turn up the car radio. At a lower volume I could only hear what sounded like a Mick Jagger vocal affectation over steady garage rock instrumentation. At a higher volume the plot thickened when the songs furious tangle of instruments and pop-perfect use of AB song-form were all properly brought to the fore. It sounded like Tom Petty’s “American Girl” was bitten by a radioactive “See No Evil” by Television” (Turntable Kitchen)

Que nadie espere novedades en esta nueva entrega del dúo neoyorquino CHALK AND NUMBERS: ellos se mueven a gusto en esa zona de confort que les supone el Pop de inspiración Retro, con continuos (y no disimulados) guiños al Pop de los sesenta, tirando por igual de influencias tan clásicas como el sonido Spector o las grandes solistas británicas. Todo ello, eso sí, aplicándolo a los tiempos que corren y facturando unos temas más que divertidos y disfrutables.
