AlexRossi – My life is a fucking demo (Ep, 2011)

“With Italian DNA and an upbringing in the southwest of France, Alex Rossi began working as a rock club Dj in the late 80s, eventually gaining his own radio show influenced by British Pop (TV Personalities, The Smiths, Field Mice) and FrenchPop (Taxi Girl, Elli and Jacno, Les fils de joie.) In 1998 Alex signed with Mercury France for a handful of singles (“Le Coeur du monde”, “Annabelle et Henri”), also writing many songs for other French singers such as Dick Rivers. In 2004 he friended journalist and writer Arnaud Viviant with whom he founded the “Situ-punk” band BALLU. Monsieur Rossi was spotted by Gonzaï magazine sometime in 2007 and was quickly offered the chance to perform a monthly residency alongside Alister ou Dondolo (Members of Young Michelin.) Since 2009 he has worked with composer Dominique Pascaud under the collective name ALEXROSSI, releasing the 5-track EP MY LIFE IS A FUCKING DEMO which includes a duet with ex-FrenchPop star Graziella De Michele.
The French writer and editor Olivier Martinelli had this to say, “Des paroles qui font mouche, un riff de guitare qui vous rentre dans la tête et n’en sort plus.

by Jeff Terich
01.19.2012
Around the late ’80s, Oxford psych-rock band Ride unexpectedly gave birth to the name of a new genre because of their somewhat introverted performance style. Taking note of the way the band members’ habit of looking down while playing, British journalists named the genre “shoegaze,” a once joking name that now represents some of the most beautiful and/or powerful rock records in existence. Shoegaze music is frequently marked by its heavy use of guitar effects, and for that matter, heavy use of guitars. It’s dense and dreamy, often very loud, but quite gorgeous all the same.

Shoegaze has been in the spotlight for much of the past decade, with bands like Deerhunter and M83 incorporating many of its stylistic elements. And bands like Ride, My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver and Chapterhouse have all embarked on reunion tours in recent years. This year will see more interesting shoegazer activity, now that Captured Tracks is planning on reissuing Medicine’s first two albums. So, in keeping with the spirit of the whooshing sounds ahead, here’s a list of ten classic-era shoegaze albums that belong in everyone’s collection.

The Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy
(1985, Blanco y Negro)
Buy at Insound

It’s probably most accurate to call The Jesus and Mary Chain’s debut album, Psychocandy, a ‘proto-shoegaze’ album. The noise-pop elements, reverb, distortion and overall euphoric vibe are all present on the album, even if it’s not quite as cleanly produced as Slowdive, or as forceful as My Bloody Valentine. All the same, The Jesus and Mary Chain are noise-rock heroes for a reason, and they’re at their ear-splitting best on this album, as noisy and chaotic as they’d ever sound. Like the Beach Boys or Ronettes with a heavy load of feedback and overdrive thrown over everything, Psychocandy is strangely beautiful in its shrieking glory.

Ride - Nowhere
(1990, Sire)
Buy at Insound

If not for one massive, head-spinning record that arrived one year later, Ride’s Nowhere would have been the definitive shoegaze album. For starters, they’re the band that inadvertently gave the genre its name, and more importantly, Nowhere is a tight, infectious and powerful rock record that invigorates as much as it swirls and loops. The band’s love of pedals is highly apparent on the release, with zooming rockers like “Seagull” borrowing some of the LSD-laced psychedelia of “Tomorrow Never Knows,” and dreamier highlights such as single “Vapour Trail” taking their sound to a more serene, yet nonetheless anthemic plateau.

My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
(1991, Creation/Sire)
Buy at Insound

There is no more heralded or celebrated album in shoegazer history than My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless, and for good reason. There is simply no other album that managed such a beautiful expression through hazy production tricks, lilting melodies and utterly massive sound. The great irony about the album, which is legendary for urban myths surrounding its creation and cost (many of which are true), is that mastermind Kevin Shields took a surprisingly simple approach, often using only two guitars in most of its songs. There are, however, songs that feature five or six vocal tracks, which help to lend the album its miasmic underwater vibe. It’s a beautiful album, and also a very noisy album, and at times, such as on closer “Soon,” even a danceable one. But lest anyone think that beauty is their sole aim should dig up one of their performances of “You Made Me Realise,” which the band transitions into 20 minutes of piercing, deafening cacophony.

Chapterhouse - Whirlpool
(1991, Dedicated)
Buy at Insound

One of the more fractured takes on shoegaze, Chapterhouse’s debut album Whirlpool is maybe the least cohesive on this list, and its long list of producers and remixers has a lot to do with that. It doesn’t sound so much like a unified whole as a collection of singles, but that being said, these tracks all pretty much sound amazing. Chapterhouse certainly dabbled in as much psychedelic atmosphere as contemporaries such as Ride or My Bloody Valentine, but with a more pronounced rave/baggy influence. Drum samples and wah-wahs abound, lending this a touch of acid-fried dance party appeal, but the melodies and atmosphere are nonetheless awesome. Perhaps it was unappreciated in its time, but Whirlpool left its mark on the music of decades to come. Just ask The Big Pink or Caribou.

Medicine - Shot Forth Self Living
(1992, American)

While most of the notable shoegazer bands of the ’90s were British, and the UK certainly produced a staggeringly large number of exceptional effects-pedal-loving acts (just look at the rest of this list), there were plenty of like-minded and equally wonderful bands emerging in America around the same time. Perhaps the best of the bunch, Los Angeles’ Medicine pushed two parallel extremes. On one hand, they were even more immediate and melodic than many of their peers, but on the other hand, they also made a lot more noise. Their splendid debut Shot Forth Self Living can be harsh and piercing at times, but also highly energizing. In tracks like “Aruca,” “5ive” and “Defective,” the group cranks up the overdrive and lets the melody flow through their Marshall stacks. It’s good for what ails ya.

Slowdive - Souvlaki
(1993, SBK)
Buy at Insound

Slowdive share a name with a Siouxsie and the Banshees song, but it’s probably more accurate to view their name as a kind of description for the dreamy, ambient pop in which they specialize. Sophomore albumSouvlaki removes some of the more immediate elements of the Reading band’s debut Just For A Day, and replaces them with more patient, beautiful soundscapes that, while plenty accessible in terms of melody, are glimmering monuments of atmosphere. It certainly doesn’t hurt that Brian Eno had a hand in a few of the songs’ sounds. Still, there are some definite standout tracks, chiefly “Alison,” the transcendent “When the Sun Hits,” and the considerably more ominous “Machine Gun.”

Catherine Wheel - Chrome
(1993, Fontana)

Very few shoegaze acts enjoyed much in the way of mainstream success, but Catherine Wheel is probably the band that came closest, landing a regular series of minor hits with singles like “Black Metallic,” “I Want to Touch You,” “Crank,” and “Delicious.” Part of that was probably a stronger push on their part, but part of it also had a lot to do with the fact that, while the band celebrated effects and texture as much as their contemporaries, they primarily wrote driving rock songs with energy to spare. One could argue that Ferment is the band’s best, but I find the songwriting is just that much sharper on Chrome, a breathtaking album that stacks up pop hooks alongside dense layers of distortion. In parts, it’s heady euphoria (“Fripp”), while in others, it’s pop perfection (“The Nude,” “Strange Fruit”).

Boo Radleys - Giant Steps
(1993, Creation)

A sprawling 17-track epic that makes full use of the time allotted on a compact disc, the Boo Radleys’ third album Giant Steps is an exhausting listen, but one that rarely loses its magnetic appeal. Caught right in the middle of their transition from more explicitly MBV-sounding shoegazers and the bright, jangly pop band they would morph into, Giant Steps is the Liverpool band’s crowning achievement, thereby justifying the use of a John Coltrane album title for its own. Here, the band shows off a jaw-dropping range, from the catchy noise rock of “I Hang Suspended” to the dub-influenced squealer “Upon 9th and Fairchild,” the power pop jangle of “Wish I Was Skinny,” and the truly awesome psychedelia of “Lazarus.” With so much going on, and in so many different directions, one might wonder whether this is truly a ‘shoegaze’ album proper, but the heavy dose of effects and trippy atmosphere that surges through its 64 minutes should put that question to rest.

Swervedriver - Mezcal Head
(1993, A&M)
Buy at Insound

You mess with the bull, you get the horns, or in Swervedriver’s case, the guitars. Easily the most aggressive of the UK shoegazing bunch, Swervedriver’s take on the style is more beefed up and intense, with sophomore album Mezcal Head bearing as much resemblance to Smashing Pumpkins’ dense alt-rock or Jawbox’s melodic post-hardcore as it does to the effervescent whoosh of Ride. From the crashing riffs of leadoff track “For Seeking Heat,” Swervedriver rarely lets up on their searing attack. They maintain a balance of intoxicated float and hard-charging crunch on “Duel,” and create a mesmerizing strata of guitar riffs on “Last Train to Satansville.” As meaty and driving as the album is, however, it’s loaded with hooks, almost every song bearing an unforgettable chorus. At the heart of it all, this is mostly a great riff rock record dressed up in chorus and flange effects, but that works just fine for me.

Lush - Split
(1994, 4AD)

A band with one foot in the dream pop world of the Cocteau Twins, and the other squarely in the noisy realm of shoegaze, Lush gradually made a transition further toward straightforward, noisy Britpop. In fact, their final album, Lovelife, sounded a lot more like Elastica than Ride, and even featured a guest vocal from Jarvis Cocker. They were at their best when floating in a distorted, yet blissful dreamspace, however, the peak of this approach arriving with 1994′s Split. It has its moments of hook-laden guitar rock, particularly in single “Hypocrite,” though its most sublime moments are typically those in which singer Miki Berenyi is seemingly at one with the ethereality of their trippy, atmospheric guitars. “Desire Lines,” curiously released as a single, slowly allows its gorgeous ambience to approach eight minutes long, and the amazing opener “Light From a Dead Star” is almost all tension, a beautiful ride toward unseen stars.

Regina – Soita mulle (2011)

“That thing about a picture being worth a thousand words? Someone should remind Regina. The front cover of the Finnish indie pop band’s fourth proper album, Soita Mulle (Finnish for “Call me”), is adorned with a beautiful black-and-white photo (taken by Megan Kathleen McIsaac) of two people lying down in a pastoral setting. Unfortunately, the ugly and carelessly placed typeface obscures and, in effect, blunts the image’s aesthetic beauty. Obviously, the band has a need to claim ownership for the album’s contents, but the image on its own so excellently represents Soita Mulle’s sensual, arresting feel that it functions strongly as a statement of purpose. Largely, Regina are working within what many listeners will instantly recognize as the dreamy, limitless confines of shoegaze– only, their take on it is less staticky and obscured than the way today’s younger bands have approached the genre. Soita Mulle’s most impressionistic moments sound clean and deep– an approach similar to what stateside shoegazers School of Seven Bells did on last year’s Disconnect From Desire– providing space to wrap yourself within their compositions, rather than attempt to smother you with blistering, fuzzy noise.
This sound fits Regina like a glove, and the new look largely makes Soita Mulle their best record yet– admittedly, an easy feat. Since 2005′s Katso Maisemaa, the band’s toyed with various genres and sounds just close enough to occasionally mix and mingle– the cool allure of French yé-yé, snatches of downtempo dance music, Stereolab’s bouncy warmth. 2009′s U.S. debut, Puutarhatrilogia, marked their most consistent effort at that point, but Iisa Pykäri’s thin, power-bereft voice resulted in her surroundings sounding occasionally chintzy and under-produced. On Soita Mulle, multi-instrumentalist/principal songwriter Mikko Pykäri’s production hand is heavy on the lushness, resulting in something more full-bodied and robust in sound. And, the improvements that Iisa’s made as a vocalist are not to be overlooked: the album’s highlights find her dipping in and out of melodies, filling the air with her voice, and effortlessly unleashing torrents of Finnish syllables. When she lets out a sweet melodic sigh near the end of “Haluan Sinut”, you breathe with her, and that’s a good thing.
Of course, Regina being Regina, the band still does a bit of outside-the-lines genre exploration, and as on previous efforts, it doesn’t always come out well. On one hand, the piping synths of “Ui Mun Luo” gel with the song’s cosmopolitan shuffle; on the other, “Harjun Takaa” seems an attempt to embrace upwards-moving anthemic melodic structures, ending stuck on the tarmac instead. The misses scattered between Soita Mulle’s hits make the album drag as a front-to-back listening experience– and this record is nine tracks in under 35 minutes. Forget the cover art: the real tragedy about Soita Mulle is that Regina grab the brass ring of consistency for the first time in their career, and with excellent results– they just can’t seem to hold on the entire time” (pitchfork.com)

Me recuerdan algo a Letting Up Despite Great Faults, en cuanto a suma de elementos Pop, Dream-Pop, Shoegazers, Twees…

Papertiger Sound – Call home (Ep, 2012)

“Twenty-twelve is already off to a strong start in terms of good music. Although there haven’t been a lot of great albums yet (after all we are only a few weeks in), there have been a host of intriguing singles popping up left and right. If these singles are a sign of what’s to come this year, then my prediction is that 2012 is going to be a great year for music. Not everything here was released in 2012 – some of these tracks have been floating around for months even – but now just felt like a good time to get them out there” (turntablekitchen.com)

Weekend – Red (Ep, 2011)

“Maybe the best thing about Sports, last year’s bruising debut from San Francisco noise-poppers Weekend, was simply how refreshing it sounded. While so many other lo-fi acts were still messing around with balmy haze and Nuggets jangle, these guys took the sound down darker, more aggressive paths. The album’s marriage of squall and melody wasn’t really anything new, but just by channeling a different set of influences– post-punk, shoegaze, the Jesus and Mary Chain– Weekend’s music felt so much more visceral than their peers’. At the same time, Sports’ charm boiled down to one idea executed very well, and it wouldn’t be unreasonable to worry if they had the depth to do that again.
So it’s encouraging to hear Weekend making significant alterations to their formula on the Red EP. Offered as a teaser for an as-yet-untitled, upcoming LP, Red finds the band operating in a much cleaner, dreamier mode and mostly pulling it off. In addition to cutting back on the background screech that dominated Sports and drawing out more melody, the big difference is how the band treats frontman Shaun Durkan’s voice. Previously a croaky drone used as an accent, Durkan’s vox is richer, recorded higher in the mix, and able to carry a song on its own.
The best place to hear Weekend’s more direct approach is on standout “Hazel“, a killer shoegaze-pop number that has a lot in common with swirling 1990s classics like Catherine Wheel’s “Black Metallic“. Set over an insistent, post-punk drumbeat and throbbing bass, the track becomes nicely un-tethered, letting guitars spin in and out of focus. There’s great dark/light tension between its tight construction and looser elements, and Durkan’s vocal strings it all together with a warm pop hook. The band hits similar high notes on “Sweet Sixteen” and “The One You Want”. The cool thing about these songs is that while they aren’t as threatening as some of the Sports stuff, they’re no less dark– it’s just a more pensive and mysterious kind of noir.
Red is only five tracks long, and two of the cuts– “Your Own Nothing” and the weirdly titled “Golfers”– are a little slight, so there’s only so much you can take away from it. But it’s an important release for Weekend, one of those classic transitional EPs– Deerhunter’s Rainwater Cassette Exchange and Abe Vigoda’s Reviver spring to mind as recent examples– where a band takes stock of its strengths and starts to pivot in a new direction. Maybe even more important is that it shows this band as much more agile and nuanced than some previously thought, able to make noise one part of its attack instead of the primary focus” (pitchfork.com) [Ooops!!

Motel Beds – Tango boys (2011)

“Right from the cool indie swagger of the opening minute long intro, “Theme From Tango”, you get the sense that Dayton, Ohio’s Motel Beds are coming at you with something solid. This track transitions into “Milquetoast Discovery”, which greets the listener with frontman Paul John Paslosky’s slightly fuzzed up croon that keeps the track swaying and makes it instantly memorable. Over the last year, the Motel Beds have been quickly propelling themselves forward with several stellar CMJ appearances, signing with the North Carolina-based indie label No More Fake Labels and collaborating with fellow Daytonian Kelley Deal (Breeders). This has the band clearly focused on success, which can be heard as it all comes together on Tango Boys. Kelley Deal makes her presence known on album highlight “Tropics Of The Sand”, as her instantly recognizable vocals mirror Paslosky’s line for line during its smooth tempo which creates an indie duet that has real buzz. “Hopeless” takes you to someplace warm with its Beach Boys type vocals and classic surf guitar vibe while the entire band shines on the catchy “Fake Army” with the stellar drumming of Ian Kaplan leading the charge. Stylistically, Tango Boys blends different genres with its unique mix of lo-fi, hi-fi and classic British Invasion indie rock that combined with its neat 34 minute running time, this release turns into a can’t miss from the Motel Beds!”

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart.
All those years, East station attendant, Totally called, In this city i´m invincible, Tally…). So natural, Are you falling in love?).
Recomendable.

Gold Bears – Are you falling in love (2011)

“Given their looks, their taste, and the fact that their repertoire includes song titles like ‘Record Store’ and color-bleeding complete-sentence quips like “After sex, I was lying awake in bed with visions of sugar plums dancing around my head” – it’s easy to tell Gold-Bears were probably pretty ecstatic to land themselves within the exclusive pedigree of Slumberland. The Atlanta collective are probably a few years too old to be getting away with their rosy jangle with complete teenaged earnestness, but their nostalgia and the pure idolization offered to the bands they’re imitating is truly palatable.
We’re talking about an album called Are You Falling In Love? for god’s sake – and the band trots out the exact miniature twee you’d expect them to; blending in soft-focus to an even greater degree than label-mates Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Sunbeam guitars, Spartan drums, frantic songs about love and music – all covered in a gentle gauze. The aforementioned ‘Record Store’ rages in the High School age; all clattering guitar jostle while frontman Jeremy Underwood’s life is saved “from the back-door /of a crowded record store.” The 2-minute ‘All Those Years’ follows in similar fashion with saccharine start-stopping chords and a particularly well-placed harmony from Juliet Sy (who, naturally, sounds quite a bit like the Pains’ Peggy Wang.) Save for the faded title-track and the gentle crash-pop of closer ‘Yeah, Tonight,’ all these songs carry a sense of direct immediacy. Pretty sing-a-longs are not saved for a payoff; they’re spread liberally and delectably through every inch of the record’s 30 minutes.
And then it passes, mostly uncontested, like a centering summer breeze. You may play back Are You Falling In Love? to make sure you didn’t miss something lurking beneath the tenderness – but it’s a fool’s errand. The straightforward, undemanding, adorable pomp of Gold-Bears remains basic in its results – built to suit any time and place, its ingredients the essences of wit, whimsy and lover’s soul. It will not encroach your list-making, but it will patiently wait for your return should you decide to take a visit to its glowing world again” (thelineofbestfit.com)

Recomendable. Disponible en su Bandcamp.

Estrangers – Black ballroom (2011)

“Through driving instrumentation and sweet melodies, Winston-Salem’s Estrangers presents a refined and occasionally tumultuous take on pop music on its debut album Black Ballroom. Although familiar, the band makes its sound personal with a swirl of whimsical layers.
Between the multiple layers of guitar and keyboard, the songs on Black Ballroom are engulfed in a cloud of infectious hazy pop. And with frontman Philip Pledger’s honest lyrics recalling hometowns, past relationships and memories, the album is easily accessible to listeners.
In many ways the sextet channels the same lo-fi pop made prominent by fellow North Carolinians The Love Language, but the band’s energy and experience is its own. Each song feels relatively personal and the band focuses on developing each layer without being too saccharine.
Songs “Tell Her No Thanks” and “L’Avventura” are fast foot-stomping ditties that combine the best of Estrangers’ musical layers, through energetic drumming and chaotic keys. As Pledger’s vocals break through the menagerie of instruments, these bouncy songs develop as dynamic standouts.
Black Ballroom starts and fades quickly, clocking in at just under half an hour. Its brevity is refreshing, but its main drawback is the parallels it draws to its influences. It’s not that the album isn’t original, but that it lacks in developing its own breed of originality.
For Estrangers, there is no doubt that the energy and the potential is there. Black Ballroom is a solid debut; perhaps all that is needed is a little more exploration in order to carve out a sound that is distinctly its own” (dailytarhell.com)
