Young Prisms: Friends for now (2011)

Young Prisms – Friends for now (2011)

“You can press play on some albums and listen all the way through while working out, walking to work, or driving aimlessly at night. San Francisco based quintet Young Prisms’ latest release, Friends For Now, will make you want to press play and lay on the hood of a car on a clear night staring up at the sky. The psychedelic, washed-out sounds, distant vocals, and looping riffs will have you entranced–and that’s just the first track.
The band’s first full-length release is an introduction to the California group’s unique and hypnotizing musical style. Starting us off is the title track, which features a slow, grainy intro with eerie echoing vocals and a scratchy combination of sound effects. The track leads into “If You Want To” and “Sugar,” both pleasant songs with consistent rhythms, looping vocals, and that distinct washed-out sound.  Unique to “Sugar” is an abrupt tempo change that breaks up the rhythmic consistency Young Prisms seems to go for.
The band is clearly a fan of the creative repetitiveness and coherent drum and guitar tempos, found throughout the album.  “Eleni” has a ’90s garage rock and post punk feel to it. With a simple looping chorus and rocking bass riff over curious sound effects, this track stands out. Soon to follow is the six-minute “In Your Room,” which will have you lost in a sea of stand out percussion, fading vocals, and consistent, pounding rhythms.  “All Day Holiday” makes for another distinct track, as obscure vocal effects and unidentifiable instrumentals blow the listener away.
Young Prisms’ mesmerizing debut is a massive success, as the lo-fi and psychedelic sounds will have the five-man group stand out. The band has a way of approaching alternative, indie, and lo-fi genres with a mind-bending twist that is not only enjoyable, but entrancing” (livemusicguide.com)
