Guards: Cover songs (Ep, 2011)

Guards editaron uno de los Ep´s de debut más prometedores de todo el año pasado (TJB, Agosto 2010). Para este curso, han decidido editar un siete pulgadas de versiones, incluyendo tres digamos que “recreaciones” libres de otros tantos originales de Metallica, Vampire Weekend y M.I.A.; es decir, tres grupos de sonidos dispares y diferentes puntos de vista sobre la música. Si he de seros sincero, la verdad es que el disco es absolutamente prescindible, en tanto que aunque se trata de recreaciones y no versiones fieles a las originales, pues la verdad, a mí no me dicen absolutamente nada ninguna de las tres covers; y además porque las originales en sí mismas no nos llaman en absoluto la atención. Si acaso la de Vampire Weekend, con ese Pop arrastrado que Guards llevan a un terreno más sombrío. Pero poco más. Podemos esperar mucho más de los autores de Resolution of one.

Guards: Guards (Ep, 2010)

 

En el 2010 para una banda no aparecer en ninguna red social es poco menos que garantía de la gente no te conozca casi en absoluto. Si además te llamas Guards y googleas el nombre del grupo, sólo te vas a encontrar con aproximadamente cuatro millones de entradas, ninguna de ellas referente a la banda en cuestión que nos ocupa. Un combo del que prácticamente nada se sabe, sólo que están formados en torno a New York y que -ésto es más una intuición mía-, son gentes que no son nuevas en esto de la música, dado su cierto dominio de la situación. Sea como fuere, lo cierto es que Guards-Ep (2010) es un disco más que interesante, preñado de buen Pop que Guards saben dosificar con esmero, sin demasiadas revoluciones y con los arreglos justitos. Una especie de Lo-Fi con órganos Farfisas ocupando un lugar preminente (Crystal truth). Una mezcla entre The Shins y Pavement bastante agradable (Don´t wake the dead). Canciones que se dejan llevar por el reproductor con la mayor naturalidad (Resolution of one, Trophy queen, Sail it slow, Long time). Un disco que nos llevará a situaciones encontradas: O bien tendrá su impacto entre la muchachada del mundillo Indie y se olvidará en un futuro; o bien nos llevará a una continuación en la que la banda se de a conocer de alguna manera y ojalá no les ocurra como a los nórdicos JJ, que editaron su Nº3 mostrando sus rostros y perdieron todo su encanto con un disco flojete. Por lo pronto Guards salva el nivel de manera más que notable. Además lo entregan en descarga gratuita.

“So a lot of my favorite music blogs have been buzzing about the Guards EP. I have had it downloaded and ready to go, but I put it aside so I could try and ignore all the hype and give it a fair listen. I finally played it, and wow, this is quite a debut EP.
Guards first hit the spotlight after Cults posted a tweet on their twitter saying that they contributed a song for the guards ep. It linked to a bandcamp page, which is the only place you can find Guards related stuff. On their is the 7 song self titled debut EP, up for free download.
The EP is solid from top to bottom. It opens with the memorable “resolution of one”, then sees Charlift’s very own Caroline Polachek contributing on “trophy queen”. Cults contributed on a song called “sail it slow”, and it’s as great as you’d expect.
Guards came out of no where but surely impressed everyone that downloaded this EP. All of the songs are memorable slices of sunny retro pop. The songs may be called lo-fi, but these guys have the mindset of songs that would fair very well with good production.
One thing’s for sure: The person/s behind Guards are no amateurs. These guys know damn well how to play.
