Epic 45: In all the empty houses (2009), Make mine music

Ante el aluvión de apariciones del nuevo lanzamiento del grupo británico Epic 45 en la Blogosfera, además de que lo hicieran en diversos blogs de distintos tipos de música, decidí hincarle el diente a este Mini-Lp de seis temas en el que el dúo de Staffordshire realiza un viaje a través del Ambient con texturas Pop. Si en algo inciden en las críticas que hemos leído de la banda es en la dificultad de encasillarles. Ésto es cierto: parten, como decíamos de un Ambient adornados con texturas Pop y cierto aire a lo Shoegaze más heterodoxo, pero no tienen reparo alguno en adentrarse en atmósferas más electrónicas si el tema así lo requiere o en los ambientes más densos del Post-Rock. We were never here es el tema que abre el disco, y es un ejemplo de este Pop ambiental al que aludíamos, parsimonioso y algo arrastrado. Daylight ghosts es algo más fácil de digerir, más Pop y más Shoegaze al que estamos acostumbrados. El ambiente se torna más denso en In all the empty houses, y la electrónica se abre camino. Algo parecido a lo que ocurre con el siguiente tema, The future is bliding. Their voices in the rafters es un instrumental de tonos igualmente melancólicos y algo sombríos. Cierra la colección Ghosts in tapes, tema con el que el dúo retoma el Pop del comienzo del disco, cerrando éste de una manera simétrica. Disco en definitiva que realmente satisfará a amantes del Ambient como de la Electrónica, a seguidores del Pop como a Shoegazers; disco de escucha amena y de tonos que avanzan la época del año que se nos avecina.

“Trying to review ‘In All The Empty Houses’ by Epic 45 is a rather difficult exercise, a band it’s awfully hard to categorise. They straddle the divide between tender melancholy pop & chiming, atmospheric post rock, definitely within the realms of the sound universe created by bands such as Disco Inferno, Bark Psychosis & Hood but more dreamy, and less edgy with a very gentle dynamic. The bass lines thrum & bob searchingly as wistful, chiming guitarscapes & homely swathes of subtle electronics are enveloped by a wistful half-spoken vocal. They seem to me very sensual in their approach, creating mini…erm “epics” of melancholy, immaculately produced ambient rock with a very British sensibility. I can hear just how they’ve honed their particular brand of audio enlightenment to perfection and it’s quite affirming to hear a band of this calibre at the top of their game. I think the trick with them is to create something comforting & familiar but still distinctive & magical, imbuing their twinkly, chiming structures with a really soothing, layered majesty which at times sounds like the calm after say, 65daysofstatic’s storm, a very satisfying blend of rock & electronic instrumentation with a certain finesse” (Nota de prensa, Bolachas.org)
