The Super Vacations: Heater Pt.II (Funny Not Funny Records, 2012)

“Ryan Ulsh didn’t stick around too long as the drummer of Wavves, but that’s perfectly fine because all that drama and Pitchfork love distracted him from his primary band, the Super Vacations, who’ve been soldiering on for years with their slacker garage rock. Not sure how many people outside of Richmond, Virginia know about the Super Vacations, but their name’s out to be thrown around a bit more with the release of their solid third LP, Heater Part II, out now on Fun Not Funny Records.
Calling this recently released LP a proper album is a bit of a misnomer since it gathers new songs plus three earlier hard to find singles all in one place. But as an introduction to the melodic, chugging lo-fi guitar rock of Super Vacations, it works perfectly. There’s plenty of jangle, psych, shoegaze and indie rock in their brand of hazy loud garage attack. Think Archers of Loaf minus the emo anthems, Yo La Tengo going all punk rock, and Swervedriver covering songs from the Pebbles comps. Fans of Black Time, Ty Segall, and Cosmonauts will definitely dig some of these feedback laden psyched out jams, like “Faded Leather Jacket” and “Hexxing”, that fill the new LP to the brim with propulsive analog noise.
The Super Vacations are not reinventing “garage rock” but they’re taking it down a distinctively late 80s/early 90s Jesus and Mary Chain/Loop/Husker Du direction which is much better than just sounding 60s retro for the sake of it. Heater Part II is worth picking up (or at least streaming), which is saying something when the internet is filled with bands vying for your attention. We don’t give number ratings here at Get Bent, but think of larger numbers and just check the Super Vacations out for yourself” (getbent.fm)
